Okanagan Studios announces the opening of Okanagan’s first full service film & television studio
Construction complete, providing 50,000 square feet of specialized production space including multiple stages, furnished production offices and ample parking on a dedicated 4-acre lot
Vernon, BC Canada, November 22, 2016: Okanagan Studios today announced the official opening of its flagship, first of three, production studios in the Okanagan region of British Columbia Canada. Okanagan Studios has responded to the record breaking demand for British Columbia production resources by unveiling the first full service film & television studio to open in the Okanagan region. The Okanagan has been a popular destination due to the additional top-up Regional and Distance tax credits (encouraging production outside of Metro Vancouver) offering a maximum credit of 69.5% on labour expenditures, assuming principle photography in the area and post production in BC – making it one of the highest in North America.
Okanagan Studios has re-purposed the former Far West Outerwear factory in Vernon, BC. The 50,000 square foot multi-level facility has undergone extensive repurposing construction opening its doors to large-scale Hollywood film & television productions interested in the area. “The Okanagan has seen strong demand for productions due to it’s unique locations, additional tax incentives and strong local crew base and we couldn’t be more excited for the opening of Okanagan Studios and the addition this strong asset brings to the region” said Okanagan Film Commissioner Jon Summerland, “this is what the region has needed and will enable our continued growth” says Summerland.
Phase 1 of 3 is complete making available two sound stages including a repurposed 100’x100’ 10,000 square foot sound proofed stage, plus a second 12,500 square foot warehouse currently offered as a flex stage. Both include upgraded 600amp 3-phase power. In addition, the studio has retrofitted 34 offices, totaling over 20,000 square feet of furnished production office space hardwired with fibre internet, VOIP phone system, onsite copiers and printers. The lot also features a separate 7,000 square foot construction shop and art department, parking for over 100 cars plus an additional lot for circus trucks and trailers. Additional expansion is planned for the current North Okanagan studio including repurposing the existing flex stage, a third purpose built stage on the lot plus the opening of Okanagan Studios Central and South locations to further meet demand and support the future expansion of screen production in the Okanagan area.
BC continues to smash records for production volume, driven by Vancouver, stretching industry resources in the Lower Mainland leading to location overuse and over capacity for all Metro Vancouver studios. “With location production and demand being at an all time high in BC, particularly Metro Vancouver, The Motion Picture Industry Association of BC (MPPIA) is thrilled to support Okanagan Studios in their launch,” said MPPIA Board Chair Peter Leitch. “We recognize this as an important step in expanding BC’s screen production sector as we look at sustainable growth across the whole province,” Leitch added.
